Changes in autism scores across childhood differ between girls and boys

Childhood trajectories: Autism traits relating to sociability tend to improve more in autistic girls than in autistic boys, according to a recent study. Researchers followed children with the condition from 3 to 11 years old and recorded changes in autism traits as assessed with the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)-Calibrated Severity Score. Seven ADOS items showed improvement in girls, and one item showed worsening, whereas six ADOS items improved in boys, and three others worsened. And the girls with the highest ADOS scores as preschoolers also showed the most improvement of all subgroups. Autism
