Overlapping concerns: Autism traits and emotional and behavioral concerns relate in different ways over time in autistic boys versus autistic girls, according to a new study. How these concerns and traits overlap and interact may inform support and intervention strategies for children between the ages of 2 and 12. For instance, social-communication difficulties were strongly associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and mood disorders in boys aged 7 to 9, but this association generally diminished by age 12. In girls aged 7 to 9, social-communication problems were most strongly associated with anxiety and tended to increase at later ages. These findings suggest critical developmental periods for mental health supports.
